Calm me and let me taste the salt you breathed while you were underneath.
I am the one who haunts your dreams of mountains sunk below the sea.

‘Brand New – Play Crack the Sky’
So, my readers – some of you should know that Australians such as myself have been suffering through various election campaigns recently. It has been a horrible five weeks of scare campaigns, two parties floundering along trying to show that the other one isn’t any good. Well it all came to a head yesterday as the polls officially opened and then closed. Yes, the voting is finished. In an unusual twist however we still do not know who has won.
For the first time in some seventy years or so we seem to have a ‘hung’ parliament… and no – it doesn’t resemble a horse in any way (unless Gillard is hiding something, Abbott sure can’t with those budgie smugglers). The election was so close that there are still some five seats in the lower house that haven’t been decided coming up to 24 hours after polls closed on the east coast. Neither the Coalition or the Labor party have enough seats on their own to form government. This in turn leaves us with a handful of very very happy independents who are about to experience about as much power as they ever will for the rest of their lives. They will be wooed and cajoled for their very important support.
Australia has voted – unfortunately that vote has landed into the small grey area that will hand quite a bit of power into the hands of these few independents that represent a very small portion of Australia. For now we will just have to wait and see – someone will eventually form government (albeit the very potential instability such a government would have). Then they can get to work on fulfilling the various promises they will have to make to gain power.
One final point of interest is the Senate – it isn’t entirely clear yet but it looks like the Greens may have control… this is sure going to be interesting. continue reading…
